I am so happy to be back with The Little Potato Company!
As always, I try to think outside the box. Summer is quickly approaching, and though we have had some summer-like temperatures this past week, you just never know what you are in for. We had an ice storm last month that caused us to miss my cousin's wedding!
This grilled potato poutine is totally Canadian, and really stays true to our heritage. Generally, French fries are used, however, there is no rule saying I cannot use Creamer potatoes 😉 To be honest, I have done a potato poutine before using Little Potatoes, but never one for the grill. This one is also more traditional as it uses gravy.
I made a homemade vegetarian mushroom gravy and let me just say, wow! I love how far vegetarian/vegan recipes have come! Of course, as always, you can adjust the recipe as you see fit. Meat gravy works perfectly, especially if you grill up some meat like I did for my husband and daughter. Even store-bought varieties work to save time and effort. I actually made my gravy in advance as I wanted my full attention on pictures! Of course, no pictures means more time for me to focus on food 😉
So why Something Blue Creamer potatoes?
I will say, as always, one of the main reasons I go with this varietal is because of their color! Who would skip over these?! Exactly 😉
However, I also want to point out that gravy is brown, and when it comes to looking appealing, well, brown can be daunting. In the photography world, brown is often paired with blue, so it is a win-win for this recipe! Looks appetizing and is pretty!
Of course, there are all the nutritional benefits of going with this varietal 😉
Something Blue are only 90 calories per serving, are a great source of potassium, and contain 8% of your daily fibre! Plus, their color sticks when cooking, making them ideal for grilling and roasting!
If you cannot find their Something Blue varietal, The Little Potato Company has many other options. I really like using their oven/grill ready packages. Convenient, vegan, and gluten-free, they make for a great option when time is not on your side! And for something like this grilled potato poutine, the seasoning provided just adds extra flavor! So don't panic: you can use your favorite Little Potato Company varietal for this recipe 🙂
📖 Recipe
Grilled Potato Poutine (Vegetarian Version Inc.)
A fun twist on a Canadian classic, this grilled potato poutine is the perfect summer treat!
Ingredients
- 2 (1.5 lbs each) bags of The Little Potato Company's Something Blue Creamer potatoes.
- 5 cups gravy (homemade or store-bought: vegetarian, or meat-based!)
- 400 g cheese curds
- Salt and pepper
- ½ tsp. garlic powder
- ½ tsp. paprika
- 1-2 tbsp. olive oil
Instructions
- Slice your potatoes in half. Place into a large mixing bowl and toss with olive oil. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Toss until well combined.
- Preheat BBQ to 400F.
- Place potatoes directly onto the grill and cook, covered, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes, or until tender. You can cook the potatoes with the lid open, but they will take a bit more time (30+ minutes.)
- Place potatoes onto a plate, sprinkle with cheese curds, and smother in hot gravy!
Notes
The amount of gravy used depends on if you like a saucier dish or not (I do!!)

We used to pile on the ranch (we would get the packets and mix it together thick). I am however looking for another way. I will not say that ranch is bad. My son loves it. I just want him to taste many different things. When I was a kid I got stuck on one thing and would eat it months at a time until I couldnt stand it any more. I dont want this happening to him. So I keep changing things up. But as a single mother its hard to find the time. Some days I lack creativity but I dont give up. I come here. You make my life easier thank you!
