Ever wonder what to do with that leftover ham bone? Think no further with this split pea soup with ham in the slow cooker!
I posted yesterday how I used my one ham bone to make homemade ham stock. It was a great way to use up leftovers, and it yielded some yummy homemade goodies! Stock is something I use all the time and if I can make it for pennies, I am sure as heck going to do it!
But then I had another bone to use up. I knew immediately that I wanted to make split pea soup with ham in the slow cooker, but definitely did not want to over-power with the ham stock. It just would have been too much I think. Cooking the ham bone with water and all the other soup ingredients basically allows for you to make the stock while the soup comes together. And anything made in the slow cooker is a win in my books!
Just like my vegetarian split pea soup, this one is super easy to make and a little goes a long way. I find I LOVE thick soups, and was slightly disappointed when the cooking stage came to an end and it was still quite liquidity… But my husband said he liked the change and since it was for him, that is all that mattered. However, once it sat, and then chilled overnight in the refrigerator, we had that typical, thick split pea soup! Yay! Basically I am getting to the point that if you want a thinner soup, add more water. A thicker soup? Add less water! Seriously, I love how soups can be customized to your liking and this split pea soup with ham in the slow cooker is no exception!
This soup is perfect with 8 cups of water, but you can adjust it to suit your soup desires accordingly!

- 2 cups split peas
- 1 leftover ham bone
- 8 cups water
- 2 bay leaves
- Salt and pepper
- 1 tbsp. coarse whole grain mustard
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 4 celery stalks, sliced thick
- 3 large carrots, sliced thick
- 2 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
- Combine all the ingredients into your slow cooker. Cook on high for 6 hours, or low for 8-9 hours.
- For a thicker soup, allow to chill overnight (or, if you are impatient, add less water!)
- Adding leftover ham is great here, but you also try and pick any pieces off the bone to add to your soup!
Easter was two weeks ago and I am still pumping out these ham recipes! Guess I’ll be ready for next year 🙂 Which is actually quite nice because this leaves me time to focus on new and exciting recipes (and trust me, I have been working on some killer summer meals!)
