Now that I have jumped on the homemade hamburger buns bandwagon, I cannot go back! These homemade hamburger buns infused with lemon and basil are sure to convert even the pickiest of eaters!
The photos and recipe for these homemade hamburger buns infused with lemon and basil have been updated as of December 11th, 2016!
Summer is here and the BBQ is fired up!
One of the easiest BBQ meals is hamburgers. No matter where you go, most offer the standard hamburger or hot dog. They are easy, crowd-pleasing, and quite difficult to screw up. Personally, I have always been partial to homemade burgers/ veggie burgers, so I go the extra step. But if you have a favourite store-bought brand, that’s great! When my husband goes camping, taking store-bought burgers is easier and more efficient. However, if I am tagging along, I feel we need homemade.
Now, what would be more perfect with homemade burgers than homemade burger buns?! Woohoo! Ever since I experimented with making my own homemade hamburger buns I try to make them with every BBQ. They are really simple and so easily customized. I mean, I have gone from plain buns (which are perfectly fine in my books!) to more gourmet combinations.
Today’s homemade hamburger buns infused with lemon and basil are a real treat! Lemon and basil are the perfect pairing, and they remind me of summer, so why not? Seriously though, you can add whatever you like, but since I was making homemade hamburgers for a previous blog post, I wanted something that stood out in the bun department. When my sister and her boyfriend came over, they could not stop gushing over these buns (okay, more like my sister, and she wasn’t even having a burger!) Kelly took a bun home with her for a different meal since she seems to be on a chicken kick as of late!
As I said, this is not my first time making homemade hamburger buns, and it will not be my last!! Give it a try, they are super simple and really don’t take too long to rise.

Ingredients
- 2 tbsp. butter, room temperature
- 1 egg, room temperature
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tbsp. instant yeast
- 1 cup warm water (105-110F.)
- 1/2 tsp. dried basil
- 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
- 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
- 1/2 - 1 tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1 tbsp. butter, melted
- 1/2 tsp. dried basil
- 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
- 1/2 - 1 tsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice
Instructions
- Combine the flour with basil, garlic powder, and cayenne. Set aside.
- In the bowl of your stand mixer, add water and yeast. Allow to sit for 5-10 minutes (until bubbling.) Add the butter, egg, sugar, salt, and lemon.
- Mix with the dough attachment to break up the egg (I feel using the paddle attachment first and then switching to the dough hook is much better.)
- Allow to sit for a couple of minutes. Add the flour mixture and mix until dough forms and looks soft (don't over-mix!) The dough will pull away from the bowl when it is combined.
- Grease a bowl with oil and transfer dough to bowl. Roll it around a couple of times and cover bowl with plastic wrap. Allow to rise until double in size.
- Punch dough down and separate into 8 equal size portions. Preheat oven to 375F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone mat and form dough into buns. Spread out equally on pan (two pans may work better.) Cover again and allow to rise until a fair size.
- Mix together the melted butter, basil, garlic powder, and lemon juice. Brush tops of buns with melted butter mixture. Bake for 15 minutes or until nice and golden. Serve with your favourite burger!
