Have fun with your children this holiday season making an easy Halloween spider buttercream cake!
Yesterday was my birthday and while I usually post on Mondays, I was lucky enough to share a post that I had worked on ahead of time with the company 🙂 My husband was coming off night shifts so he was home early in the morning to make our daughter breakfast while I walked around in a tired haze. He “hid” my gift in the pantry that I never found until he handed to me, haha. “Hid” being the word here because it was in plain sight but I never saw it! In my defense, I was not working on my birthday!
Today is a different story though. 4 years ago today my daughter was born! I cannot believe it! I feel old just saying that, haha. Everything went smoothly and I could not ask for a better experience (still no future children though!) You may have seen her Nightmare Before Christmas cake last week, and I may have another post in regards to a second birthday cake, but today’s cake is something we worked on a little while ago.
This easy Halloween spider buttercream cake is exactly what is says: easy! My daughter helped me out with the design and colours (it is fun working as a team when the meal is easy!) Some spots are a bit rough from her overzealous spinning of my lazy Susan cake stand, but overall I think anyone can do this design (and probably make it cleaner!) We were making the cake for my friend, Tonya, who was my manager when I was still working and whose birthday passed this summer (when I was really short on time and feel awful that I never made her a cake!) She was super happy with her cake and even more pleased Éowyn helped out because she absolutely adores my daughter (best manager ever!)
For the design, as I said, it was quite simple. You could even change up the tips you use to make it completely your own. For the white buttercream part, I used my 1M Wilton tip, and for the orange and purple areas I used a #12 tip and one size down (you will find when you have many decorating tips from different brands that the sizes don’t always match up.) For the spiders I just coloured some of the icing black and used the #12 tip again. The cake itself is a vanilla cake (because there are actually people out there who do not like chocolate, gasp!) and the buttercream is my plain, vanilla buttercream. You can easily use boxed cake if preferred! I actually tweaked the cake recipe slightly (using coconut oil instead of plain oils) and loved the moistness it added to the cake!
Originally the cake had no spiders on it, but we decided it looked too plain. I didn’t want to throw the “easy” concept out the window so we thought about it and came up with spiders! Hence the name easy Halloween spider buttercream cake 🙂 Fondant would be fun here but definitely is more work and this cake can easily be completed in no time (I like to bake and decorate on the same day but you can make the cake a day in advance.)
And that’s that. Introduce your child to cake decorating at a young age because not only is it fun, but it is great motor skills. Heck, my hands still shake when I pipe so I try and get in all the practice I can. You can see our lines are a bit wonky, but given that my child is only 4, I think we did pretty darn good! If your child has no patience for decorating, they can definitely help out in other areas such as adding ingredients to the mixing bowl, stirring the food colouring into the icing, and licking up any extra frosting that may fall! Éowyn liked to spin the cake stand while I worked, resulting in it being a competition of who could work faster 🙂
